The R&D team in Middelburg is part of the Agilent Chemistries and Supplies Division and is focused on consumables for gas chromatography (GC) and liquid chromatography (HPLC). The team is looking for an experienced polymer chemist to join our research and development team. You will be responsible for designing, synthesizing, and characterizing novel polymers and organic materials to be used for new and innovative GC columns and related consumables. You will also collaborate with other scientists and engineers to optimize the performance and properties of the materials.

As the successful candidate, requirements and responsibilities include:

  • Perform hands-on organic and/or polymer synthesis, modification and/or functionalization on lab scale to develop innovative polymers to be used for next generation of chromatographic consumables;
  • Perform analytical and materials characterization techniques to understand and optimize synthetic processes transfer technology from the R&D lab to manufacturing (from lab prototypes to a reproducible and economical production prototype);
  • Work closely with the local R&D team and manufacturing team as well as with the global R&D team within the organization.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or Master Degree in Organic Chemistry, Polymer chemistry, Material Science, or related field;
  • Significant hands-on experience with organic and/or polymer synthesis, modification, functionalization and application;
  • Proficiency in analytical characterization of polymers or materials;
  • A track record of scientific publications, innovation and intellectual property development would be preferred;
  • Ability to document experimental work and prepare presentations, technical reports, summaries, procedures and protocols;
  • Excellent verbal and written experience in both English (must) and Dutch (preferred).

On a personal level, you are agile, able to adapt to different working methods/environments, and you show good problem solving skills. You communicate clearly with colleagues and customers and you are comfortable speaking in public. You enjoy both working within a team and autonomously. Finally, you are capable of taking ownership and leading a variety of projects.
