Role Purpose:

We are on the hunt for a visionary Cell Line Development (CLD) Lead Scientist who can bring their expertise and creativity to our dynamic team focused on developing next generation, industrially relevant CHO cell expression platforms. As a Lead Scientist joining our team of five, you will be responsible for the development and optimisation of Lonza’s evolving CLD platform from stable pool to clonal cell line generation for biologics production, while supporting and coaching junior team members, guiding them through complex technical challenges.

Key responsibilities:

  • Pioneer: Contribute to the delivery of new CHO-based mammalian expression hosts and vector systems for the expression of complex therapeutic proteins;
  • Innovate: Explore innovative ideas to optimise the cell line development (CLD) process including the use of state-of-the-art automation equipments, novel technologies, and more, to push the limits of what’s possible;
  • Lead: Independently lead several collection of projects from design and execution of experiments to data analysis and presenting of findings with confidence and clarity;
  • Collaborate: Work closely with cross-functional groups within & outside of R&D to deliver solutions or improvements in recombinant protein expression and support commercialisation;
  • Stay Ahead: Actively keep abreast of relevant academic literature (e.g., in the field of cell engineering and expression technologies), applying them in creative ways.

Key requirements:

  • Academic Excellence: PhD degree/Post doctoral fellow with at least 3-4 years of relevant experience in an R&D setting . Or BSc/Masters with 8-10 years of relevant experience;
  • Industry Expertise: Proven experience in mammalian cell line development and implementation/development of automation for cell line screening and optimisation, ideally within a high-stakes industrial environment;
  • Technical Mastery: Proficiency in CHO cell culture, stable transfection, single cell isolation (i.e. Beacon™ Opto-fluidic Technology), clonal expansion and small-scale bioreactors (i.e. Ambr15);
  • Scientific knowledge: Ability to translate basic scientific concepts into practical applications and integrate scientific knowledge to solve problems and issues. Communicate and apply scientific ideas effectively;
  • Networking Skills: Establishes and maintains good working relationships with key project team level stakeholders. Proactive in building relationships within group, forthcoming with support and demonstrates strong ownership of deliverables;
  • Team Spirit: Thrives in a collaborative environment and can also drive projects forward independently while supervising other junior members in the team.
