The purpose of the role is to maintain Lonza Pharma & Biotech as a leading contract manufacturer through the development and optimization of fed-batch and perfusion process technologies at lab scale employing automation engineering solution.

Key responsibilities:

  • Working closely with the upstream R&D team; plans and executes several complex (non-routine) lab-scale fed batch and perfusion bioreactor process development and optimization experiments
  • Experience with mechanistic modelling for CHO cell bioprocessing
  • Set up, operate, and maintain lab-scale bioreactors for mammalian cell culture. Monitor bioprocess parameters and ensure optimal conditions for cell growth and productivity
  • Support setting automated sampling (integrating the process analytical instruments at-line) and integrating the upstream and downstream towards a continuous manufacturing process
  • ​Generates experimental results and reviews respective scientific documentation
  • ​Is responsible for ensuring that studies are scientifically sound and in line with current regulatory guidance and expectations
  • ​Helps with ensuring lab procedures are adhered to and supports safety assessments
  • ​Design, develop, and implement automated systems to optimize upstream bioprocessing workflows
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand process requirements and translate them into efficient automation solutions
  • Work in close collaboration with IT/OT/Network Infrastructure and Security Teams to ensure a reliable and secure automated manufacturing environment
  • Support updates to and maintenance of data historian systems
  • Complying with the required relevant Lonza training
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Key requirements:

  • EngD/PhD/MSc/Meng/Field of Study: Bioprocessing/Chemical Engineering/Biotechnology or similar field
  • In depth knowledge in lab-scale bioreactor control and upstream process development for mammalian cells with 4-5 years of experience.
  • Experience with mechanistic modelling for CHO cell bioprocessing
  • A strong background in mammalian cell culture
  • Knowledge of perfusion techniques and know how to develop new manufacturing processes to produce next generation antibodies
  • Familiarity with PAT (Process Analytical Technology) tools and analytical techniques (Tridex, Octet) are a plus
  • Demonstrated innovative skills and experience with leading complex technology projects
  • High level of communication and presentation skills
