Are you interested in generating a step change in the performance of CHO cells in biomanufacturing?

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced bioproduction scientist to join our rapidly expanding R&D team based at our Cambridge site. You will be responsible for providing scientific/technical leadership in the development of bioprocesses using our gene-edited cell lines and implementing approaches to help our clients in the production of therapeutic proteins using our mammalian cell lines.

Working closely with internal stakeholders and Horizon customers, you will lead a team of talented scientists to build on the commercial success of Horizon's GS knockout CHO K1 cell line. Horizon is using gene engineering to drive fundamental improvements to the CHO cell host to better support the development and manufacturing of next generation therapeutics. We are looking for a candidate with extensive experience in biomanufacturing/bioprocessing in order to underpin the development and release of these new CHO lines, as well as optimising the performance of our existing GS knockout CHO cell platform.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Management of a team of R&D scientists dedicated to supporting our current biomanufacturing products for our expanding Biopharma customers.
  • Manage current product support including support of potential and existing customers as well as overseeing development of near-term new products in the Bioproduction space
  • Work seamlessly with the Manager Bioproduction R&D to coordinate priorities and resources needed to achieve specific goals for the team and the business
  • Work closely with the Commercial team, Field Scientists, and Product Manager to communicate with customers, assist in troubleshooting, and develop data in support of our current products
  • Provide high level scientific expertise and input on current and future strategy in Bioproduction to drive development of world class products for our Biopharma clients
  • Empower employees to take responsibility for their projects, roles and goals
  • Cultivate and foster a culture of cohesive teamwork, transparency, and efficiency.

CORE SKILLS:

  • Strong track record of effectively managing a team of diverse scientists, ranging from junior scientists through highly experienced scientists
  • Experience in effectively communicating with current and future customers, ideally in the Bioproduction area
  • Strong cell and molecular biology skills, ideally related to cell line development
  • Strong track record of project planning and successful execution
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment with excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and also within a matrix organization

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • PhD degree or corresponding experience in a relevant scientific discipline (Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering, etc.) with postgraduate experience in the Bioproduction industry or in a leading academic institution
  • Management experience gained in the commercial biomanufacturing space
  • Experience or knowledge of analytical methods and/or process controls commonly used in manufacturing processes would be highly desirable
  • Experience with development of bioreactor protocols and scale up studies for mammalian cells is highly desirable
  • Experience with use of statistical methods for study design (DOE) and multivariate data analysis would be beneficial
