Position summary

The Portfolio Director & Team Lead, Scientific is a strategic, expert-level role with responsibility for leading (with an Account Management counterpart) all account-associated activities (including scientific direction and strategy, project management, resourcing, and business development) across a portfolio of accounts, as well as developing high quality scientific content. They are also responsible for the overall line management of a Scientific writing team (typically 7–11 team members), either directly or through support of line managers who report to them.

Key responsibilities

Account strategy and planning:

  • Provides overarching scientific, strategic, and tactical direction/leadership for the assigned account portfolio (in collaboration with the Account Management counterpart), maintaining strong working relationships with external stakeholders and engaging in discussions of science and strategy with both clients and external experts.

Content development:

  • Demonstrates expert knowledge of assigned therapeutic area(s), client and competitor product(s), the market, the compliance/regulatory environment (general and client-specific), and develops high-quality content for a range of project types, writing styles, and media as appropriate to target audience(s);
  • Provides critical review and feedback on line reports’ and other team members’ work;
  • Drives client meetings and onsite programs, including leads or contributes to scientific and strategic discussions with clients and external experts, as needed.

People/line management:

  • Ensures (directly, or via the support of less experienced Scientific managers) the well-being of all Scientific team members, providing support and guidance as required and facilitating appropriate development opportunities (including driving training plans); also provides support for less experienced line managers/senior team members in mentoring less experienced writers;
  • Identifies/advises on Scientific team resource requirements for assigned portfolio of accounts to ensure effective delivery;
  • Participates in recruitment activities, as needed.

Project leadership:

  • Drives process implementation and manages and prioritizes own and team workload, delivering to agreed timeline and budget;
  • Drives adherence to agreed processes and procedures (internal and client-related) and expert use of employs tools (e.g. DataVision, Zinc, Clear, etc.), as appropriate, to track and manage deliverables;
  • Provides input to project specification and budgets, and drives project status/milestone tracking and out-of-scope reporting to ensure project profitability, including negotiation with external partners regarding scope changes, escalating as appropriate.

Business development:

  • With an in-depth knowledge of EPG multichannel business offerings, recognizes or proactively identifies opportunities for organic growth and wider new business, and flags to Account Management lead; drives the development of scientific content for new business opportunities/proposals and participates in pitch presentations.

Skills and experience required

  • An advanced degree (or equivalent relevant experience) in a life sciences or clinical discipline;
  • Typically, more than 10 years of medical communications experience, preferably with experience gained across both publications and non-publications medcomms deliverables;
  • In depth knowledge of assigned therapeutic area(s), as well as ability to assimilate new information, working across or switching between multiple areas, as needed;
  • Proven ability to lead a large medcomms (publications and/or non-publications) program, ideally in a global environment, is preferred;
  • Strong portfolio management/program leadership skills; ability to manage own workload, time, and priorities; and to motivate a multidisciplinary, multi-geographic project team to deliver projects effectively to time and budget;
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to interact confidently and appropriately with colleagues across the business, and to work effectively as part of a global, multidisciplinary team;
  • Ability and confidence to develop and maintain strong working relationships and willingness/ability to discuss science and strategy with external stakeholders at all levels.
