Job Purpose

We are seeking ambitious, highly-skilled, reliable individuals who will be responsible for analysing and interrogating large “omic” oncology datasets for biomedical discovery. We are looking for individuals with a wide range of skills and backgrounds who will work together to create innovative solutions to analyse cancer cohorts. These include brain, colorectal and haematological cancer cohorts. Suitable candidates would ideally have a background in both health/life sciences and bioinformatics and/or computational biology.

This position involves highly intensive data analysis and does not involve any laboratory work.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To set-up and maintain workflows in order to analyse, integrate and interpret sequencing data from tumour and germline samples and phenotypic data.
  • Work efficiently as a Research Team Member, with others, in varying roles, across a broad range of functions.
  • Plan, co-ordinate and prioritise data analysis.
  • Propose and develop innovative solutions to complex genetic problems.
  • Collaborate in GMI’s strategic scientific development.
  • Train and mentor staff members.
  • Work with scientists, bioinformaticians, clinical team members, systems analysts, and software analysts.
  • Communicate findings with research teams, Genomics Medicine Ireland, collaborators and interested external parties.

Qualifications

  • PhD in bioinformatics, biotechnology, biomedicine or related molecular biology research area.
  • Knowledge and experience in the field of cancer genetics is a requirement.
  • Documented experience in using data analysis pipelines/programmes (e.g. NGSQC, GALAXY, DNAnexus, Ingenuity Pathway Analysis, BWA, GATK, SAMtools, ANNOVAR, PLINK/SEQ, Congenica, OmicSoft).
  • Programming experience in Python, R, Java or Perl as well as experience of working in a Unix/Linux environment.
  • History of publication in top peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in the field of genomic research.
  • Experience in driver mutation identification, clonal-subclonal evolution, somatic mutation signature analysis, drug target identification, metastatic data analysis, quantitative genetics, pathway analysis, multi-omic data analysis, statistical genetics.
  • CNV analysis, structural variant analysis.
  • Experience with multiple large genomic datasets (e.g. 1000 Genomes, ExAC, ICGC, TGCA).
