Expert Scientist, Head Preformulation and High-Throughput Technologies

The Head, Preformulation and High-Throughput (HT) Technologies, in TRD Drug Product Belgium, leads long-term strategies for high-throughput technologies, analytics, preformulation and preclinical formulation. You will be expected to lead, design and execute scientific studies in support of technical programs as they progress from Discovery into toxicology/Phase I/ II, Phase III, Process Evaluation for PPQ and for lifecycle support and trouble-shooting. You will lead a team of scientists and technicians in execution of study plans.

Key responsibilities:

  • Design and lead specific development workstreams autonomously, in line with business priorities, following the Quality by Design framework. Create the high-throughput technologies and analytics for preformulation studies and preclinical formulation preparation and characterization;
  • Independently responsible for the conception, design, implementation, and interpretation of scientific and technical data to support projects;
  • Lead a laboratory with scientific staff of approximately 10 employees to design, implement, and interpret the data from Discovery, Development and Lifecycle workstreams. Manage process and analytical laboratories to ensure they are fit-for use and for purpose;
  • Manage budget, resource forecasts, prioritization, EHS, scientists and technicians performance and development. Lead and implements SOE/EHS/QA rules application;
  • Make sound scientific/technical and business decisions based on a balance of data, analysis and experience;
  • Function effectively as a core team member on multiple concurrent project workstreams and established work processes. Work effectively in a global culture;
  • Solve complex problems through collaborations with others, taking a new perspective on existing solutions. Drive interactions within TRD Drug Product, Drug Substance, Analytical, and with the Belgium RDC Preclinical and GIO Quality Control;
  • Generate strong relationships in the area of technical development with high quality partners beneficial to the organization, both internally and externally, to strengthen development/implementation of new methods/technologies;
  • Prepare and present scientific data within Technical R&D and represent GSK externally (conferences, etc).;
  • Author and review technical protocol and reports in support of various project development stages;
  • Utilize technical process knowledge to meet regulatory requirements appropriate for stage of development;
  • Communicate effectively within TRD and with external stakeholders and able to defend scientific and technical decisions at the appropriate technical board;
  • Benchmark specific technologies in own functional area to bring technology to state of the art. Establish and oversee high profile external collaborations with Academic Institutions;
  • Contribute to and drive strategy and technical development planning and accountability in the execution thereof. Lead cross-functional teams to advance technologies in the area of responsibility;
  • Ensure execution of the function’s risk assessment and escalate at relevant bodies. Development of mitigation plans;
  • Act as a voice and ambassador of the department at various governance bodies/meetings

Why You?

Basic qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or related scientific field with 3+ years of post-doc and/or job-related experience;
  • MS in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or related scientific field with 6+ years of experience;
  • Command of written and spoken French and English is mandatory;
  • Must have the ability to work with cross-functional teams, in matrix environment, and communicate effectively.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Good understanding of biopharma/vaccine development process;
  • Ability to impact scientific and technical vision and strategy. Sound scientific methodology and thinking;
  • Deliver data to guide development of robust and manufacturable processes and methods;
  • Advanced people management skills;
  • Experience in high-throughput technology and preformulation is a plus.
