The purpose of this role is to provide operational direction and leadership for:

  • driving the successful launch of rare disease products in the respective region/countries and evolving the penetration to meet patient needs;
  • building and managing the dedicated in country resources to launch the SMA asset;
  • ensuring the dedicated SMA team collaborates effectively with cross functional resources from Biogen’s specialty business.

Job Description

The person in this role will lead a cluster of countries and report directly into the SMA Head of Therapeutic Operations for EU+.


  • Develop and successfully execute EU+ commercial strategy at the local level in close collaboration and alignment with Regional HQ;
  • Build & maintain high performance x‐functional in‐country teams, ensuring launch readiness including medical, market access, sales readiness and supply;
  • Collaborate with resources at EU+ Regional HQ to leverage and customize centrally created operations, marketing, marketing access and medical materials to match local realities and maintain ongoing dialogue on local market issues/needs;
  • Lead the process of setting local sales targets, annual incentives and review process;
  • In close cooperation with EU+ Regional HQ, lead the local segmentation & targeting process.

Cultivate and maintain relationships with thought leaders, payers, professional organizations, patient advocacy and associated key stakeholders in the assigned region & countries. Collaborate successfully with Regional HQ Functional leads and with local functional leads and Country leadership to design and execute an effective stakeholder engagement approach. Build the Biogen reputation in the SMA and rare disease community, maintaining strong relationships and trust with key stakeholders, PAGs and the media.

Build the cross functional field execution team: Support the EU+ Regional SMA team in profiling, hiring and developing team members to successfully execute the strategy. Work with local HR experts/talent acquisition and leadership from the Specialty business to source and hire the best commercial/operational talent in country (e.g. key account managers, market access and medical resources ). Provide direct supervision and leadership to the key account managers and be accountable for development of the cross functional team of both dedicated and shared SMA resources. Build a high performing team that is motivated to deliver on the strategy and collaborate with their Specialty colleagues in country.

Drive excellence in execution at the account level and support the team in ensuring broad access across SMA centers of excellence. Partner with Regional HQ functional leads as necessary to explore innovative access strategies as a local level. Develop a robust launch excellence plan and comply with EU+ ELOT (European Launch Operations Team) processes and tools to design, track and manage this plan on time, on budget.

Be accountable for the delivery of performance objectives & financial KPIs ensuring highest ethical standards. Lead the development of country level forecasts for SMA in close collaboration with Regional HQ (e.g. operating expenses, revenue, patient dynamics, supply). Ensure effective collaboration, governance and communication between Specialty business and SMA HQ on setting and achieving these objectives and KPIs.

  • 10+ years in pharmaceutical industry, significant number of years in a leadership role;
  • Thorough understanding of commercial business aspects including sales planning and execution, market access, patient advocacy, regulatory, reimbursement and hospital formulary listing;
  • Significant experience and track record of success in sales management;
  • Strong leader with a track record of leading teams, effective coaching & building talent;
  • Highly competent with commercial IT systems (e.g. CRM);
  • Fluent English, any of the CEE region languages will be an asset;
  • Experience outside of sales (e.g. marketing, operations, market access) desired;
  • Experience in the rare disease platform strongly desired.

  • Formulating and implementing effective marketing and sales strategies;
  • Effectively working with and leading cross functional teams;
  • Developing business cases to recommend and rationalize investments and other strategic actions;
  • Building successful commercial teams & strong people management capabilities.


  • BSc/BA (MBA preferred).
